How Long Does Ovulation Last? Egg Viability and Fertile Window Explained

Published August 21, 2026  ยท  5 min read

Ovulation is often talked about as a "window," but in biological terms, the actual release of the egg is closer to a door that opens very briefly. Understanding the difference between ovulation itself and the fertile window around it is essential for anyone trying to conceive โ€” or trying to understand their cycle.

How Long Does Ovulation Actually Last?

The moment of ovulation โ€” when the mature follicle ruptures and releases the egg โ€” happens quickly, within minutes. The egg is then viable (capable of being fertilized) for approximately 12 to 24 hours. After that, if no fertilization occurs, the egg disintegrates and is absorbed by the body.

So in the strictest sense, ovulation "lasts" about one day. But this narrow window is why trying to time intercourse to the precise moment of ovulation is both unnecessary and extremely difficult. The real window for conception is much wider.

The Fertile Window: Up to 6 Days

While the egg survives only 12โ€“24 hours, sperm can survive in the female reproductive tract for up to 5 days under ideal conditions (fertile-quality cervical mucus provides a hospitable environment). This means conception is possible from intercourse that happened several days before ovulation.

Research shows that the fertile window spans approximately 6 days: the five days before ovulation and ovulation day itself. Conception rates peak in the last two to three days of this window.

Why This Matters for Timing

Because the egg is viable for such a short time, intercourse after ovulation is too late. This is why many conception experts recommend having sex in the days leading up to ovulation, not just on or after it. The goal is to have sperm already in the reproductive tract โ€” ready and waiting โ€” when the egg is released.

This is also why some people miss their window by relying solely on after-the-fact confirmation methods like basal body temperature (BBT). A BBT rise confirms ovulation has already occurred; by the time you see it, the egg's window may have passed. Pairing BBT tracking with prospective signals like OPKs and cervical mucus monitoring gives you both advance warning and retrospective confirmation.

Does Ovulation Ever Last Longer?

Occasionally, two eggs may be released within the same ovulatory event (within 24 hours of each other) โ€” this is actually how fraternal twins occur. But the total window of egg viability still doesn't extend beyond about 24 hours. One cycle = one ovulation event, even if two eggs are involved.
